Re: Support
The Breast Care Nurses are a wonderful support. I'm glad you got to talk to one before surgery.

You are doing all the right things MO...and what a relief when the op is over! I was fortunate not to develop lymphedema after a full axillary clearance and I hope you will be the same. I did have slight swelling in the arm and fingers which I imagine is pretty normal as the lymph system adjusts itself but this gradually went away. You probably have read about loss of sensation under your arm? This is quite strange at first ....putting on deodorant etc.... and in my case lasted for many years.
So glad you have a breast care nurse to chat to. I would have loved someone like that but they weren't around when I was diagnosed...nor was the internet!!

MO what part of Melbourne are you in? I used a wonderful physio who specialised in the lymphatic system after my lymph node removal. Hearing what you are going through is bringing back so many memories that have been long forgotten. I am glad they have given you the exercises as they are really important. I was too scared to do mine and didn't really get much information about them so I started to get cording under my arm and believe me you don't want that. That part of the physiotherapy really hurt but to have a lymphatic drainage massage was so nice.
I'm glad that you have had so much help with getting ready for the mastectomy and all it brings.

Hi all,
RAng my breast care nurse a few days ago just to touch base before my operation next week and had an appointment with her today. She is a great member of my medical team and has been a great support so far.
We talked about lots of things from surgery to lymphedema and prostheses to physio. I am feeling well informed and well equipped to face the next stage of my treatment. She said that where my tumour was would now be a necrotic lump. I was so pleased to hear this; my liquid gold chemo has been doing its job. We also discussed lymphedema. As I'll be having full axillary clearance I'm at a greater risk of developing it. She gave me a brief overview of what to do to minimise the risk. I was given contact details to arrange an appointment with a specialist lymphedema physio prior to my surgery for baseline measurements of my arm and to get some practical exercises to get the lymph moving again. My nurse also gave me a comfort pillow to wear over my shoulder for after surgery and a matching bag for the drains; I found out I'll be having three drains. I was also shown some of the wonderful prostheses that are available and contact details of suppliers for when I'm ready for them. I spent an unhurried hour and a half with her and am so grateful that more of us have access to this service and these wonderful women.
Hugs to all,
Mo xxx
