I was on the pill and also IVF taking clomid which makes you produce enormous amounts of eggs for collection. That can't have been any good for me also.

I was on the pill from 17 to 25 , that was in the late 70's to early 80's. My GP didnt like prescribing the pill to women that smoked and at that time I was a smoker. I then had IUD's (not the hormone one's) between having children right up to my dx at 50.
I am triple Pos.

Makes you wonder. I was on the pill from when I was 18 to 30. Had baby #1, then back on it until 32. Had trouble conceiving the second time, had a miscarriage, (probably my body trying to tell me something...) but I persisted and was diagnosed at age 34 while 27 weeks pregnant. Hmmm.... Good topic Vespa. xxxx

The PillThe combined pill contains oestrogen. Oestrogen can stimulate breast cancer cells to grow. In theory, taking extra oestrogen could trigger a breast cancer to develop. Several large studies have looked at whether the pill can increase the risk of breast cancer. The overall picture seems to be that there is a small increase in risk while you are taking it. But the increase in risk goes back to normal 10 years after you've stopped taking it. Balanced against this, the pill also seems to reduce the risk of some other cancers, such as ovarian cancer.

The research into the contraceptive pill and breast cancer risk is outlined below. Several research studies have shown an increase in the risk of breast cancer while women take the pill and for a while afterwards. But 10 years after stopping the pill, the risk is back to that of a woman who has never taken it. However, a recent large UK study by the Royal College of GPs looked at 47,000 women and showed no increase in the risk of breast cancer in women taking the contraceptive pill. However, many different types of contraceptive pill were used by the women in this study and some were older types of pill. So it is difficult to apply the results to women taking modern types of the pill.

The pill has changed a lot over the years. It used to contain more oestrogen and progesterone than it does now. So older types of pill may have a different effect on breast cancer risk. In the UK, the older style higher dose pills came off the market about 30 years ago. A few research studies have looked at different types of pill to see how they affect breast cancer risk but they have not come to any firm conclusions. One study found a higher breast cancer risk with the older style pills but this is only one study and we need more research before we can be sure.

We don't really know if taking the pill increases the risk of breast cancer for women who have a family history. Some research says it may increase breast cancer risk in these women. Other studies have found that it makes no difference. So we need more research to find this out

I was on HRT for 10 years without a break. It was double strength. I am ER+ and strongly believe that it contributed to me getting breast cancer. I had a couple of B9 tumours removed before the 3rd one which was BC. Those times when I went off the estrogen I was terrible. When they told me I had to go off the last time DH said to them that they'd better get me straight jacket. However, I was fine.

I might add here that I'd had a hysterectomy at 37 so had already gone through a surgical menopause. My specialist said that because I no longer needed the estrogen then my body could have been storing too much which was feeding the cancer. Hence this is why I was on Tamoxifen and now on Femara to strip all estrogen from my body.

None of my friends still take HRT or aren't game to tell me anyway.

I always say to women if I hear they are taking it, that they should have a break every 6mths to see if they still need it.

Funny you say that Jezza, I never had boobies till I went on the pill.

I will try and find the article again, it wasn't saying just triple neg, but that there was a higher incidence of triple neg.

Just about every member of this forum has breast cancer and just about every one of them would have been on the pill at some time or another I would guess although I do agree with Echidna that it was a lot stronger back in the 70's.

I first went on it back then. I had always been small breasted but my bust size increased a lot not long after I started taking it.....lots of extra hormones surging around I would say. I'm sure that can't have been good.

I was on the pill for 9 or 10 years from late 60's to late 70's when it was a lot stronger than it is today.
I then changed to natural contraception (ovulation method) to avoid and then to become pregnant.
My first baby was born when I was nearly 37 which is a risk factor.
I never used HRT but did occasionally use a herbal skin cream for PMS and menopausal symptoms.
Menopause didn't happen till age 57, another risk factor.
I was DX with Er+, Pr+, Her- ILC at age 58.

Hi Ginny,

I was on the pill for 11 years...from the age of 18 to 29, when I stopped taking it to try for my first child. Had my son at 30, then diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer 9 months after that. I do have BRCA mutations which obviously caused my cancer but interesting to read that it is advised that people with BRCA 1/2 mutations should not take the pill (oops!!).
