You are certainly going through a lot at the moment but I'm sure you won't regret your decision.

I was diagnosed 25 years ago after finding a breast lump and had a mastectomy. Because of family history I had a propylactic second mastectomy 6 months later. The Brca tests weren't available so long ago but having the second mastectomy removed a lot of the worry of a recurrence for me. (and so far I haven't had one!)

I'm so glad that you have had support from friends and family. It's such a tough time but you are nearly through it and avoiding radiation treatment is a bonus.

Hugs

good luck with the ovaries Barb. Finding that lump when you did is indeed a lucky break. I have family history so I opted for dble mx with implants at same time - avoiding rads also helped this decision. No regrets today on that path. Good that you are feeling better - its a huge adjustment to make.

So long as I get the all clear with my ovaries, I should be ok. I would of had to have radiation if I didn't have the mastectomy so soon. So I have had so luck amongst the news.

Hi Brabarb,
Welcome to the forum. We are lucky to have the means to diagnose these genes and give those with them the power to choose a regime to prevent BC or to screen for it.

You do find out who your friends are and particularly who are not.

Please feel free to ask any questions, we are here to help. :hugs:
Janette

Newbie Brca2 breast cancer

Postby Brabarb » Sun Mar 19, 2017 9:50 am

Hi all, my name is barb, I am 51,a mother of two teenage boys, from Melbourne and I discovered I was positive to the brca2 gene after discovering a family link, late last year. I wasn't overly concerned about being positive and was happy to take on board the advice of mammogram and ultrasound. I had been having regular mammograms and wasn't due for one yet. The advice was to also remove ovaries, which I wasn't keen on, as menopause wasn't in my world as yet. I was shocked and my world when into a spin, when a small cancerous breast lump was discovered and I began this new chapter in my life. I have since had a lumpectomy and decided to have a double mastectomy with implants. My ovaries are coming out in a week. I had the double about 8 weeks ago and had 6 weeks off work. The fear and pain I felt emotionally has subsided and I feel grateful in so many ways, that by finding out I was brc2 positive, led me to have found this lump early. I have some questions to ask, but this is my story! I have found the kindness of friends and people I don't even know very well, brings tears to my eyes. It is a rough emotionally and physical path and the support is what has made it bearable.
