There are a number of possible responses if there is an element of doubt - they can either take a wait and watch approach (which may depend on what type of finding there was on the original scan), or they may decide to further scans (things like MRIs or more specialised biopsies), or they might proceed to a surgical biopsy process. This is all likely to depend on what the original findings were. I'm a person who wants a lot of information, so I would be asking for an explanation of how and why they have reached their recommendation, as well as what the alternatives are (and why those alternatives are not being done), and what the pathways for a second opinion are if you decide you would like to have one. I hope the new week brings answers and reassurance for you.

Hi Yaamba

Did they do the core biopsy under guided ultrasound? The reason I ask is because all my scans showed a malignant lesion but my first needle biopsy came back inconclusive. Because my medicos knew from the scans that there was cancer, they decided to do the core biopsy under guided ultrasound.

I am pleased Breastscreen are being vigilant and that you hold them in high regard. You know in your heart, however, that this is something you need to be proactive about. I would be heading to my GP for referral for further definitive testing.

I do hope further tests provide a good outcome with no cancer found.

I would be asking about further imaging just to rule out any risk that the changes are cancerous. The earlier you pick up breast cancer the better your likely outcome. A core biopsy doesn't always tell the whole story.

Hi yaamba, I am not sure about biopsy coming back clear but I certainly have very dense breast tissue and my mammogram didn't show anything and mine was done at Macquarie University Hospital and they have the very latest 4D Mammogram machine, the ultrasound only showed up one of my tumours (I had over 20 in total) and the core biopsy I had gave the wrong results (it said it was Ductal not Lobular). What I have learned through this whole journey is that dense breast tissue does behave differently and it is very hard to image. I needed to have an MRI to see exactly what was left in my breast after lumpectomy and also to screen the other breast. Because they could feel changes in your breast they may discuss how they can image you better. It sounds like they want to do everything not to miss anything. Although MRI is expensive it is the best imaging device for very dense breast tissue has no exposure to radiation. What and see what they say, they may just want to monitor you very carefully. :hugs: ...Trula

Did your core biopsy came back ok, yet Cancer found later?

Postby yaamba » Sat May 24, 2014 12:18 am

Hello all,
This is my first post, but I have been reading lots of posts as a "guest". I am after a bit of feedback from others regarding accuracy of core biopsies done and what questions I should be asking (if any).

I had my routine mammogram a couple of weeks ago at Breastscreen, and received a recall soon after. This did not phase me as I have very dense breast tissue and am regularly recalled. This time though, a change in tissue in my right breast was found quite clearly. The doctor checking my breast said she could faintly feel a "mass". Ultrasound performed but still image showed tissue changes. More ultrasounds and other examinations, but results the same. It was decided to do a core biopsy. By this time, I realized of course that things were not looking too crash hot. At the end of the biopsy, the doctor asked me to return the following week for results and to bring someone with me.

Then, two days after all this was done, I received a call from Breastscreen to say that core biopsy came back clear. It goes without saying this was good news.

The nurse who rang me said that the "team" was meeting on Monday to discuss my case. I talked with her about it and asked whether the core biopsy could have missed any nasty areas and only took samples from the clear parts. She said that these among other factors were the sorts of things they would be discussing.

I am concerned that as there is no real explanation for the definite change in the tissue (ie no trauma to the breast, or previous scarring etc),and that a possible tiny cancer might have slipped through the core biopsy target.

Is there anyone else out there who got a "clearance" from initial work up, but then found that cancer was found later?

What are the questions I should be asking? Should I be requesting re-testing? Having the tissue removed? I dont think I can wait another 6 months or so for a follow up routine test. One of the team members will ring me on Monday afternoon with the result of the discussions, and I would like to have some questions ready.

have the highest regard for the team at Breast Screen. Their professionalism, dedication and efforts cannot be praised enough, so please do not in any way interpret this post as any sort of criticism. On the contrary, I will trust their judgment implicitly.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

I was not sure which area to post this, so could Moderator please relocate this post if its in the wrong place? Thanks
