Some good suggestions here for you. It sound like you may have to encourage mum to get further tests and ask questions. Nothing conclusive has been found as yet. You need answers. It is a very stressful time till you know one way or another :hugs: :hugs:

From your post I can't gather what the Drs are recommending the next step is in trying to get a clear diagnosis of your mum's problem.

I had a fine needle biopsy which proved inconclusive but at the same time that I got these results I was booked in for a biopsy(day surgery) on my lump and everything was explained to me.

As others have said you must go back to your GP with your mum. Two heads are better than one as far as understanding and remembering all that is said. Tell her what you have told us. ....that you don't understand what is happening and you are worried and need things explained.

Please let us know how you get on.

Hi and welcome Jessica,
I agree that the results are inconclusive from that report. I would hope that they would arrange more tests. The only way to accurately determine the size of a mass or lesion is to remove it usually with a margin around it. Likely though that they would try another biopsy first.

Please let us know how Mum goes with this, there is lots of support for you both here. :hugs:

Jessica, yes, definitely a worrying time for you all.

Did your mum have an ultrasound at the time she had her mammogram? When results are inconclusive, women are often referred for a core biopsy which takes a larger sample than the fine needle.

Certainly your mum must be proactive in getting answers and stay in close contact with her doctor.

Best wishes.

Jessica, welcome to the forum, you are in very good company here as we all understand how stressful it is to be waiting for test results when there is the question of cancer hanging over you.

To me, these results sound as if they didn't get a good enough sample (not enough cells) to draw any conclusion. Your mother's doctor should recommend another test (either another FNA or another type of biopsy) so they can get a clearer idea of what is happening. The specialist normally looks at all of these pieces of information together in order to provide a diagnosis, so you will find that you are waiting a bit longer before you really know what is going on.

It's important that you/your mother keep asking questions until you find out what is going on. If the doctor you are seeing is a GP or family doctor, it might be time to ask for a referral to a specialist breast surgeon for further investigation. Let us know how you get on.

WAITING FOR RESULTS!

Postby jessica88 » Tue Jun 14, 2011 10:45 pm

Hi everyone, I am new to this site and was hoping for some support and any information anyone has that could help me understand everything that is going on. My mum has been told there is a suspicous lump in her breast and has been sent for all these tests.

My mum had found a lump in her left breast 6 months ago, she told the doctor and was sent for a scan, mammogram and if needed a biopsy. She did not go to this due to putting it off. At the end of april 2011, she overworked herself moving the house stuff around, she became very dizzy and was vomitting due to the dizziness. We took her to the doctor and they said it was a virus, we went and got a second opinion and she was told it definatley was not a virus! Which she new herself it was not, she new it was something with her head that was wrong. She slowly got better through the days and weeks, though to this day she has to have a walking stick to walk because of unbalance in her head. She was finally diagnosed with an inner ear signal dropped. The inner ears signal to the brain had dropped, this is why she cannot walk properly.

She went to a third doctor, the one who knows about the lump in her breast. She made her finally go for the mammogram and scan, this was a week ago. The results came back that there was 95% chance that it was cancerous. It says its multifocal in the left breast. The left lymph node is dense with a question mark. She was then sent for a fine needle biopsy to confirm these results. She finally got it back today which came back inconclusive. The results said :

Macroscopic: 2 slides Microscopic: The direct smears contain one group of epithelial cells only. The needle washing has been processed and is non-contributory. Summary: Left breast (FNA) No specific diagnosis can be made on this material.

There is no where on the reports saying what size it is.
Does anyone know what this last biopsy report means? Or has anyone had a similar report? We have been waiting a week for more information and now it just came back inconclusive! We (our family) have been going through hell through this time! Which I am sure you all would understand.

Please if anyone has any advice please write back! Need any help/advice/support we can get!
Thanks, God bless.
