Some of the ladies on the bcmets list have mentioned cyberknife treatments for brain, lung, liver and spine mets. It is considered palliative rather than curative.

Bingo!
I found some interesting information about the procedure being conducted at the Prince of Wales Hospital in Sydney. Here is the link to that site http://www.sesiahs.health.nsw.gov.au/RadONC/ but that is only one site.
I can't believe that I had not heard of this before as I try to be well informed.
Anyway, it is all early days but there appears to be a case for cautious optimism re brain some brain tumours.

Thanks Janine, I will do that. It is important to be well-informed.

Thanks Janine.
I have been doing a bit of research as well, looking particularly for clinical trials, but I have not found anything substantial yet. There is certainly plenty on the Cyber-knife site but I want to see some independent research on the procedure. I will keep looking.

Someone mentioned this treatment earlier for brain mets and I chased it up a bit then. It does seem to be becoming more commonly used in Europe and the US and seems to be having good results for some cancers and mets. From the cyberknife site: "...over 50,000 patients have received treatment and there are now 150 CyberKnife® systems installed worldwide."
I am not an expert, this is just my understanding but it is not so much a new treatment as a more advanced and accurate way of delivering radiotherapy, able to deliver higher doses to the tumour while avoiding damage to normal cells. It can also possibly get to tumours that are unreachable with conventional rads.
I do not think it is a cure as I have seen claimed on some websites, any more than radiotherapy is a cure.

Wow, I've never heard of it, I too wonder what the success rates are using cyberknife treatment.

Janine have you read anywhere that suggests this is in regular use and having good results?

If you are wondering what cyberknife is -
"Watch and an interview with neurosurgeon Steven Chang, MD . The video was made in March 2002 and mentions there were only five CyberKnife units in the United States at the time."
