Abbreviations and Acronyms - Medical and Chatroom

abc - advanced breast cancer
adj - adjuvant chemo
AI - Aromatase Inhibitor - hormonal treatment (femara, aromasin, arimidex)
ALND - axillary lymph node dissection
bc - breast cancer
BCT - breast conserving therapy
BMD - Bone mineral density
BRCA1 & BRCA2 (pronounced by some people as bracka one and bracka two) - Genes, prone to multiple mutations, that are involved in about five percent of breast cancer
ccr - cancer
DCIS - ductal carcinoma in situ Cancer is confined to the milk glands or ducts and has not invaded nearby breast tissue.
DEXA or DXA - Dual energy X-ray absorptiometry - a means of measuring bone mineral density (BMD).
dx - diagnosis
EAP - expanded access program - drug not approved yet but available under some conditions.
EBC-early breast cancer
ER - Estrogen receptor status of the cancer - positive means that Tamoxifen, femara etc may be effective
FEC - combination of chemos 5FU, Epirubicin, Cyclophosphamide
FNA - Fine Needle Aspiration (biopsy). A very fine needle is placed into a mass or lump to extract a little bit of tissue which is sent off for analysis.
HER2 - (Human Epidermial growth factor Receptor) status of the cancer - positive means that Herceptin, Tykerb may be effective
hx -history
IBC - inflamatory breast cancer
IDC - infiltrating or invasive ductal carcinoma
ILC - infiltrating or invasive lobular carcinoma
LCIS - lobular carcinoma in situ. Cancer is confined to the lobes or lobules and has not invaded nearby breast tissue.
mbc - metastatic breast cancer
meds - medications
mets - metastasis
MUGA - MUltiple Gated Acquisition scan, a test of heart function using a radioactive tracer
N=1, 2, 3, ... whatever - number of positive lymph nodes
NED - No Evidence of Disease
NOS - Not Otherwise Specified
ONJ - OsteoNecrosis of the Jaw. A possible side-effect of zometta.
PR - Progesterone receptor status of the cancer - positive means that Megace etc may be effective
ps - plastic surgeon
rads - radiation treatment
SE - side effect
SNB - Sentinal node biopsy
T - size of tumour
- T1 - up to 2 cm
- T2 - 2 to 5 cm
- T3 - more than 5 cm
- T4 - Tumor of any size with direct extension into the chest wall or skin edema, ulceration, satellite lesions (to the same breast), any inflammatory cancer
Triple Neg - 'Triple negative' - ER-, PR- and HER2-
tx - treatment
WBR - whole brain radiation
WLE - wide local excision - Surgery removing the tumor and 1 to 2 cm of tissue surrounding the tumor
