Cancer and Wellbeing Days
A calm photo of mountains at dawn, with shades of pink and purple.
Emerging evidence shows cancer patients may benefit from a range of mind-body therapies and lifestyle choices. Activities such as meditation, yoga, tai chi, acupuncture, exercise and massage can be helpful. They are used alongside standard medical treatment to reduce side effects and improve emotional health and wellbeing. Women are advised to always speak with their medical team about the therapies and activities they are using.

Women affected by breast or a gynaecological cancer are invited attend to one of our Cancer and Wellbeing Days to:

learn more about ways to improve their wellbeing
meet up with other women who have experienced breast or a gynaecological cancer
try activities like yoga, tai chi, meditation, feldenkrais and exercise with the help of experienced practitioners
enjoy a light vegetarian lunch.

Chemobrain after breast cancer — participate in a research study

Some women who have had chemotherapy experience what is commonly known as ‘chemobrain’, which can include forgetfulness and difficulty concentrating.
A student researcher (Lauren Smith), from Department of Nursing at the University of Melbourne is conducting a research study, ‘Exploring the experience of cancer related cognitive decline in women with early stage breast cancer treated with chemotherapy.’ Lauren will use information from the study to develop an information resource that can be given to women about to start chemotherapy, to better prepare them for this side-effect of chemotherapy.
If you are interested in participating in this study and have had early breast cancer which was treated with chemotherapy, and are either:
About 6 months after treatment or
Between 3 and 5 years after treatment
You might be interested in discussing your experiences at an informal discussion group?

A group is being held:
Friday 22 February
Counterpart Resource Centre
Queen Victoria Women’s Centre from 9.45am to 11.30am
info@counterpart.org.au or ring 1300 781 500

*Please register your interest by Wednesday 20 February.

Do you know a woman who might be interested in joining our volunteer team?

We are currently recruiting Peer Support Volunteers to join our team. Our Peer Support Volunteers provide a listening ear and practical support to help women adjust to life following a cancer diagnosis. We will be training a new intake of Peer Support Volunteers in July. Applications are now open and close on Monday 27 May 2019. Apply online here: Counterpart - get involved - volunteer

Want to know more?
Come along to an information session and meet some of our volunteers:
Tuesday April 30 from 11am until 12pm
Wednesday May 1 from 2pm until 3pm
(Bookings essential)

Read more about becoming a Peer Support Volunteer.

We are also looking for women to assist in our library. Library volunteers work on Tuesdays – preferably a minimum of once a month. Tasks are varied, but include processing loans and returns, covering and labeling new resources, setting up displays and maintaining the pamphlet collection. Training and ongoing support will be provided.

Please contact our Volunteer Coordinator Kellie Holland on 8488 9834 or kellie.holland@counterpart.org.au to book into an information session or to find out more.
