Making Connections
Events for people living with Advanced Breast and Gynaecological Cancers.

Early Phase Drug Trials and Molecular Profiling
Thursday 24 September, 1.30pm – 3.00pm

Stylised graphic of a DNA sequenceBen Tran, Consultant Medical Oncologist at the Royal Melbourne Hospital is actively involved in clinical trials especially focused on drug development, molecular profiling and personalised medicine. Ben will speak about early phase drug trials and molecular profiling targeted for people with advanced/metastatic cancer (including breast cancer and gynaecological cancers). Part of this program is the capacity to test each person’s cancer for 48 of the most important cancer genes. In doing this, the hope is to find ‘driver’ genetic changes that can be matched to targeted treatments on clinical trials.

This session will be broadcast as a webinar, so you can either attend in person or participate online.

To participate online, please register for the webinar here, or to attend the session in person at the BreaCan Resource Centre, please book online or RSVP by email.

Join us to commemorate Advanced Breast Cancer Awareness Day
Coffee, Cupcakes and Reflexology too
Wednesday 14 October, 10.30am – 12.00pm

A special morning tea for all women living with advanced cancer and their supporters. Advanced Breast Cancer Awareness Day aims to raise awareness about the needs and concerns of women living with advanced breast cancer. BreaCan is committed to supporting women living with advanced cancer and on this day in particular, staff and volunteers would like to recognise and pay tribute to the thousands of Australian women who live with advanced breast cancer.

Come along to BreaCan and join us for coffee, teas, delicious cupcakes and to top it all off, some pampering with reflexology! This is a great opportunity to chat with other women living with advanced cancer and our volunteers. We hope we will see you there.

Please let us know if you are planning to come so we can book your reflexology time. (Reflexology appointments are for women living with advanced cancer.) Our reflexologist Bernadette will tailor your reflexology session to your needs on the day, even if you are not feeling 100%.

Welcome to the final edition of the What’s On for 2015. This is a very special What’s On program because it will be the last held at the BreaCan Resource Centre in its current location. By now, most of you will be aware that BreaCan has to move from its current location in the Queen Victoria Women’s Centre (QVWC). We were informed by the QVWC Trust last year that our lease for our lovely ground floor position won’t be able to be extended beyond 2015.

This calendar, we are again hosting an information session off site. We’re partnering with our friends from Western Health to run a singing session in Altona alongside our usual information and support.

During the next few months we will be very busy with our regular Resource Centre activities, alongside a number of other initiatives. We’ll be finalising the Connecting and Supporting rural women with cancer project, establishing a Bridge of Support at Sunshine Hospital, working on Navigators, and looking for sponsors so we diversify our funding!

As well, we will be undertaking an independent evaluation of Breacan to look at what we do and how we might reach more women in the future. You may be asked to participate – please do – as it is really important for the people who use BreaCan to contribute to its future.

And all this while looking for a new home and getting ready to move. In the meantime, it will be business as usual. We will make sure there’s the least amount of disruption possible and that you’re kept up to date with any developments on the relocation page on our website.

As always, please let us know if you have any ideas about new topics and/or presenters that you would like to add to the BreaCan calendar, women’s needs will always be at the heart of what we do.

Cheers,

Lee Kennedy
BreaCan Manager
We are continuing to run some of our sessions as webinars, so if you can’t make it to the Resource Centre in the CBD, you can link in via the internet with a computer or iPad/tablet.
