Postby Janette » Thu Jan 31, 2013 10:54 pm

What's On at BreaCan
February - April 2013
Dear Janette, welcome to our e-What’s On program of BreaCan events for the first part of 2013. A new session we are offering in this period is: Listening to Music for Energy, Relaxation or Creativity In this session we discuss how consciously choosing particular music can influence our mind and emotions in a positive way.

Don't forget that along with our information sessions, BreaCan runs a free fortnightly Feel Good Gentle Exercise Program and offers free Reflexology appointments to women living with breast cancer or a gynaecologcial cancer (Uterine, Endometrial, Ovarian, Cervical, Vulval, Vaginal).

The emotional impact of a gynaecological cancer
An event for women living with gynaecological cancer co-hosted by BreaCan and Ovarian Cancer Australia

Thursday 21 Febraury
1.30pm - 3.30pm

It is widely understood that surgery and active treatment typically follows a cancer diagnosis, however the emotional impact and adjustment process that follows can feel more unpredictable. Many women have difficulty managing the uncertainty and sense of loss of control associated with cancer treatment and living with cancer, and often experience stress, anxiety and sadness. Join Dr Naomi Thomas, Clinical Psychologist at the Centre for Women’s Mental Health at the Royal Women’s Hospital for a discussion on the emotional adjustment to a gynaecological cancer diagnosis and common issues experienced when living with cancer.

Passionfruit has done away with the blackened windows, swing doors and fluoro signs and laced sexuality with sensual style and a whole lot of fun. Michelle Temminghoff, owner of the shop, will show us some of the more popular products for women, and give you a chance to look, feel, enquire and possibly buy! We’ll meet at Passionfruit in Richmond before the store opens to the general public. Details will be provided at time of booking. Request to join this session

Cancer and Nutrition
Monday 25 February
11.00am – 12.30pm
A cancer diagnosis often leads women to consider changing the food they eat, avoiding some foods, or taking supplements. Cancer treatment can sometimes result in weight gain or weight loss. There is a lot of dietary information available but much of it is misleading, confusing or contradictory. It can be hard to figure out what a balanced diet actually is. Jo White is an experienced Clinical Dietician working in oncology at Cabrini Hospital. Jo has a strong focus on helping people make ‘real life’ choices about their food and nutrition. N.B. this session will be held at Women’s Health Victoria, level 8, 255 Bourke St Melbourne. Limited numbers so please book early. Request to join this session

Social Solos

In response to feedback from women who attended the Flying Solo session last November we are offering all single women who’ve experienced cancer, the opportunity to catch up in an informal gathering. Come along to meet and connect with other women in a similar situation. Drinks and nibbles will be provided. Request to join this session

Mindfulness – Responding Rather Than Reacting to Life’s Challenges
Thursday 21 March
10.30am – 12.00pm
Mindfulness is simply described as ‘moment to moment awareness, with acceptance’. When we are being mindful, we are engaged with the present moment, and are able to weather the storms of life more easily. Mindfulness is an enriching approach to living, and a skill than can be developed and strengthened through specific meditation practices. Join Suzanne Peyton, Mindfulness Teacher, to learn how Mindfulness programs help reduce the experience of stress, and participate in some introductory activities. Request to join this session

Kay Kilham is a Music and Imagery Therapist and social worker in private practice. In this workshop Kay will guide participants in learning how to listen, and what to listen for, when choosing music for a specific purpose.
