What's On at BreaCan
August to October 2012

Welcome to our What’s On program of BreaCan events for August, September and October for women living with breast or a gynaecological cancer. We trust that the program includes sessions of interest and value to the women you work with and support. Women can get a copy of the What’s On by calling the resource centre on 1300 781 500 or email us at breacan@breacan.org.au.

Don't forget that along with our information sessions, BreaCan runs a free fortnightly Feel Good Gentle Exercise Program and offers free Reflexology appointments to women living with breast cancer or a gynaecologcial cancer (Uterine, Endometrial, Ovarian, Cervical, Vulval, Vaginal).

Free Information Forum for Women Living With A Gynaecological Cancer

Resource Library now has extra copies of the book as well as CD recordings of Craig’s talk recorded in May this year.

Breast Cancer Health and Wellbeing Forum in Bendigo: Bendigo Breast Cancer Support Services Network is hosting this forum on Wednesday 17 October from 8.00 to 3.30pm at the Bendigo Club, 22 Park Street Strathdale. Further details to come.

Intimacy, body image, sexual confidence and relationships

The Cancer Council has opened a new free phone counselling service for people affected by cancer. The service is open to women, men and their partners and can be accessed by calling the Cancer Cancer Helpline on 13 11 20 to make an appointment for a phone counselling session with a doctor who is a specialist in this area. The Warwick Foundation
The Warwick Foundation supports young adults from 18 to 40 years who have a diagnosis of cancer. Information about the programs, information and support offered by the Warwick Foundation can be viewed on their website
New BreaCan Staff Appointment
Robin Curwen-Walker has been appointed to the position of Programs Officer. We welcome Robin as she comes to BreaCan with extensive experience in the health and community sector, most recently working for Breast Screen as a Community Information Officer.

Breast Cancer Network Australia’s National Conference 2012 will be Australia’s largest consumer breast cancer conference.

Opportunities to participate
Young women have your say

Young women - fertility, sexuality, treatment induced menopause, navigating relationship. Since BreaCan will be doing some work this year to explore and respond to the needs of young women with breast cancer. The first step is to speak with young women and hear about your experience and what we could do to better respond to your needs. If you would like to tell your story or have input into this work please contact Robin Curwen-Walker at robin@breacan.org.au or call on 1300 781 500.
Diversity and breast cancer

BreaCan is often approached by researchers who are keen for us to promote participation in their studies. In this What’s New, we invite participation in a research study exploring the experiences of women with breast cancer from the diversity of social, personal and cultural backgrounds. This project is seeking to hear from women who live in rural areas, are in a same sex relationship and from culturally diverse backgrounds.
Who is conducting the research: The School of Psychology at the University of Queensland
What is involved? A telephone interview which will take around an hour

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Share morning tea with us to acknowledge Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Followed by 12–1.30pm – Victorian Cancer Biobank Information Session
The Victorian Cancer Biobank coordinates the collection and distribution of tissue samples for use in cancer research in Victoria, Australia and throughout the world, with the aim of delivering better clinical outcomes to people with cancer. Come and hear Avis Macphee speak about how the Biobank works, its role and significance in supporting clinical trials and research. Avis represents consumers on the Executive Board of the Biobank and is a retired medical scientist and a passionate and informed consumer advocate in the cancer field.

Restoring the Balance After Cancer Treatment
Wednesday 8 August
12–1.30pm
Recovering from cancer treatment can be a long process, both physically and emotionally. Tara McKinty will address the topic of restoring a sense of wellbeing and balance to our lives, and the factors that can help or hinder this process at a deep level. Tara is an experienced counsellor who specialises in helping people through life-challenging illness and loss. Tara spoke recently at our forum in Geelong and the clarity and insight, she brought to this topic resonated strongly with the women present. Request to join this session

Breast Cancer and Bone Health
Thursday 16 August
12–1.30pm
Dr Esther Briganti, an Endocrinologist in private practice and associated with St Vincent’s Private Hospital, will provide a non-oncology perspective on the impact of breast cancer therapies on bone health in premenopausal and postmenopausal women with breast cancer. She will review the outcomes of clinical studies which have shown ways to prevent or reduce bone loss, as well as discuss other factors that may affect the risk of osteoporosis. This talk will be especially pertinent to women whose breast cancer is hormone receptor positive and have used, or are currently taking hormone therapies such as Tamoxifen, Arimidex or Femara, as well as premenopausal women who have had chemotherapy and/or their ovaries removed. Meditation
Thursday 30 August
11am–12.30pm
If you are interested in learning how to relax the body and calm the mind, this introduction to meditation may be what you are looking for. The benefits of meditation are well known: clearer thinking, reduced stress, better health, pain management and deep relaxation being some of them. Matthew Young from the Melbourne Meditation Centre will guide us through a variety of meditation techniques. Request to join this session

Breast Oedema
Monday 3 September
12–1.30pm
Some women experience breast oedema (pain, swelling or hardening of breast tissue), following surgery and/or radiation treatment for breast cancer. This may occur with or without arm lymphoedema being present. Susie Grabsch is a physiotherapist from the Mercy Lymphoedema Clinic who treats women with breast oedema. She will speak about what it is, the risk factors, how it is treated (including advice about bra fitting) and where to seek help. Request to join this session

Gynaecological Project Update and Morning Tea
Wednesday 12 September
10.30am–12pm
To coincide with International Gynaecological Awareness Day, we are presenting the outcomes from the joint project undertaken by Ovarian Cancer Australia and BreaCan to improve access to information and support for women in Victoria who have a gynaecological cancer. Nicole Wilton will update us on the project findings and the ongoing collaborative work between our two organisations. Request to join this session

Art Therapy Workshop
Monday 17 September
11am–2pm
If you would like to explore something that is important to you through using a creative approach, this may be the session for you. Clare Barrett, an experienced counsellor and art therapist will facilitate this workshop. There will be a variety of creative methods available including drawing and collage. No previous art experience or skill is necessary. All materials are supplied and lunch is provided. Request to join this session

Feel Good Gentle Exercise Program
This program offers gentle exercise to tone the body and help the lymphatic system. Conducted by a qualified instructor, the sessions are held fortnightly on a Wednesday from 10.30 - 11.30am. Women participating need to complete enrollment forms prior to attending.

Body Image, Self-Esteem and Sexuality After Cancer
Wednesday 17 October
6–7.30pm
Many people experience changes to intimate and sexual aspects of their lives after a cancer diagnosis and treatment. Some people would like to talk about these issues, but the question is who is willing to listen? Sandra Wilson, Cancer Nurse Specialist from the Cancer Council Victoria is one who will. In a fun, frank and sensitive style, Sandra will discuss practical strategies to assist us to communicate about sexuality, and to build sexual confidence and enhance intimate relationships after cancer. Partners are welcome to attend. Request to join this session

Qigong
Wednesday 24 October
11am–12.30pm
Qigong is an ancient Chinese health practice. It consists of simple and gentle movements designed to release energy blockages and restore balance to mind, body and spirit. Marg Wyatt, Director of Open Sky Qigong, will guide us through these graceful movements and answer questions about the practice. Request to join this session

Planning a Funeral
Monday 29 October
11.30am–1pm
Planning a funeral can be a challenging and daunting prospect. Unfortunately this planning often happens when we are the least prepared and emotionally vulnerable. Sometimes we know our loved one’s wishes and preferences for this event and sometimes we don’t. What do you need to consider and where do you find practical advice about planning a funeral? Come and join Leigh Martin, Registered Wedding and Funeral Celebrant for an uplifting discussion of the practical, personal, creative and unusual ideas for farewelling and celebrating the lives of our loved ones, or even ourselves. Reflexology Appointments
Reflexology is a system of health care, incorporating mind, body and spirit. It offers tangible benefits to those living with a diagnosis of cancer and complements existing treatments. Please call 1300 781 500 to book an appointment.
