2012 What’s On at BreaCan
BreaCan is a free, confidential information and support service for people affected by breast cancer or a gynaecological cancer. The service is open 10.00am–2.00pm Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, Ground Floor, Queen Victoria Women’s Centre, 210 Lonsdale Street, Melbourne. Call in or phone one of our trained volunteers on 1300 781 500.

Sleeping Soundly

Monday 7 May 12–1.30pm
People with cancer face a range of significant physical and emotional stressors and the large majority will experience sleep problems at some point during their cancer experience. Justine Diggens, Clinical Psychologist from Peter Mac, will talk about what contributes to sleep problems, what happens when we are sleep deprived, cancer specific factors that contribute to sleep loss and some strategies to get that good night’s sleep!

Enhance Your Wellbeing
Thursday 17 May 12-1.30pm
Dr Craig Hassed is a GP, researcher, and senior lecturer at Monash University’s Department of General Practice. His book ‘The Essence of Health’ provides a practical and systematic approach for people wanting to empower themselves to maintain and enhance wellbeing, whatever our current state of health. Craig will speak about the essential elements of health and wellbeing that we can control, including; what we eat; how active we are; our state of mind; how we relate to the world and those around us; and the environment we live in. Bookings essential.

Managing Menopause after Cancer
Thursday 31 May 11–12.30pm
The onset of menopausal symptoms after treatment for breast or gynaecological cancer can have a long-lasting effect on quality of life, body image, sexual function and self esteem. Martha Hickey is the Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Melbourne. In her clinical practice she runs menopause services at The Women’s Hospital. Professor Hickey will speak on the management of menopausal symptoms in women after a cancer diagnosis.

Anxiety

Wednesday 6 June 6-7.30pm
A level of distress or anxiety after a cancer diagnosis is not unexpected, but if not managed may lead to an anxiety disorder. Jane Fletcher, Psychologist at Cabrini Health will discuss a range of anxiety disorders, the impacts they can have on an individual and their family, and some simple strategies to keep anxiety under control.

Breast Reconstruction – What you need to know
Thursday 14 June 11am–12.30pm
Dr Hamish Farrow is a plastic surgeon who works in the field of breast reconstruction. In this session, Hamish will cover a number of areas including what women need to consider when deciding on breast reconstruction, the types of reconstruction surgery available, current issues about breast implants and new developments in the field. Music for the Mind, Body & Soul
Wednesday 20 June 11am–2pm
Emma O’Brien, Senior Music Therapist at the Royal Melbourne Hospital, will facilitate an interactive session about the way music can be used to help heal and maintain health and well being in our lives. Singing optional, ears a must! Limited numbers so please book in early. Lunch provided.

Caring For You – For women living with a gynaecological cancer
Monday 25 June 11am–2pm
It is easy in our hectic lives to get caught up in the business of getting through the week without occasionally stopping to take a deep breath. Join Jane Jeffers (Holistic Counsellor), and Kay Kilham (Psychotherapist) to reflect on how you can nurture body, mind, and soul. The session will involve discussion, practical strategies and creative exercises to help you cope with your busy lives, relax and revitalise. This session will be jointly hosted by BreaCan and Ovarian Cancer Australia for women living with a gynaecological cancer. Limited numbers so please book early. Lunch provided.

Yoga

Wednesday 4 July 11–12.30 pm
Sally Dawson is a classical yoga teacher and Principal of the Waverley Yoga Studio. In this session Sally will talk about the benefits of yoga for women affected by cancer. She will also cover practical aspects such as postures, deep relaxation, meditation and conscious breathing. This session will not involve floor or mat work.

Sashiko
Monday 9 July 11–12.30 pm
Lea O’Sullivan, owner of Japanese fabric and textile business Kimono House, will teach us the basics of Sashiko, a decorative form of Japanese embroidery. Come and learn this very relaxing technique of hand stitching and create a small piece to take home. No sewing experience necessary.
Places are limited and as this session is always popular, priority will be given to those who haven’t participated in a Sashiko, Hana Flowers or Fabric Origami session before. Please book early.

When there are long term side effects
Wednesday 18 July 12–1.30 pm
This session will focus on the psychological aspects of managing unexpected long term side effects which arise as a consequence of cancer treatment. These issues, including but not limited to; lymphoedema, peripheral neuropathy, bone and joint problems, fatigue, and menopausal symptoms, can have a significant impact on adjusting to life after treatment. Jane Fletcher, psychologist and Director of the Melbourne Psycho-Oncology Service at Cabrini Health, will facilitate this session.

BreaCan is hosting two free forums for people affected by breast cancer or a gynaecological cancer living in the Gippsland or Barwon South West regions.
The day includes an expert presentation on living well after a cancer diagnosis, creative workshops and opportunities to meet other women living with cancer. Morning tea and lunch is provided, partners or a family member are welcome to attend. Registrations can be obtained by calling BreaCan on 1300 781 500 or visit the website at www.breacan.org.au

Consumer Consultation Meeting
Have Your Say

Tuesday 1 May 5.30pm–7.30pm
BreaCan is looking for women who have completed treatment for early breast cancer and would like to share their experiences and insights at a consumer consultation meeting.
The meeting will be held at BreaCan (210 Lonsdale St. Melbourne) and is part of a project in partnership with the Melbourne GP Network, the Women’s, Royal Melbourne and Western Health.
The project is looking at ways to improve the supported transition to survivorship at the end of active treatment for early breast cancer or DCIS.
20 places available. Some pre-reading will be required.

Introductory Reflexology

Reflexology is a system of health care, incorporating mind, body and spirit. It offers tangible benefits to those living with a diagnosis of cancer and complements existing treatments. Jennifer Rigby is a reflexologist and registered nurse offering an opportunity to alleviate some of your stress and tension. Please call to book an appointment.

Feel Good Gentle Exercise Program
This program offers gentle exercise to tone the body and help the lymphatic system. Conducted by a qualified instructor, the sessions are held fortnightly on a Wednesday from 10.30-11.30am. Women participating need to complete enrolment forms prior to attending.

Making Connections — for women living with advanced breast or gynaecological cancers
BreaCan runs activities for women living with advanced breast or advanced gynaecological cancers. If you would like to know more please call 1300 781 500.
