May
Making Sense Of The Pathology Results

Thursday 12 May 12–1.30pm

The important role a pathologist plays in the diagnosis of breast or gynaecological cancer is often not well understood. Dr Leonie Constable is a Pathologist with Melbourne Pathology. She will explain what happens from the time of the initial biopsy to the test results, the level of information you can expect, the criteria for staging a tumour and how a pathologist works with the medical team. Bookings essential.

Pilates
Wednesday 18 May 12–1.30pm
Pilates is a series of controlled movements that engage both the mind and body - exercises that allow each person to experience a new awareness of muscle function and control. Join Maria Davis, a Pilates practitioner for 12 years, to learn more about the principles of Pilates and to give a practical introduction to the Pilates method. Exercises are taught in a seated position, so there is no expectation of fitness or flexibility. Bookings essential.

Chemobrain”: Cancer, chemotherapy and the brain
Thursday 26 May 12–1.30pm
Some women who receive adjuvant chemotherapy for breast cancer complain that their ability to think clearly has been reduced since treatment began. Research into this topic is growing and there is now stronger evidence that subtle changes in thinking do occur in some women. However the reason for this is still not clear. Professor Paul Maruff (Centre for Neuroscience, University of Melbourne) will discuss some of the more recent findings of studies of the relationships between cancer, chemotherapy and brain function. Bookings essential.

June
Talking To Your Teenage Kids About Cancer

Wednesday 1 June 12–1.30pm
The transition from adolescence to adulthood is an important but difficult developmental period, for both the parent and the emerging adult. What happens if you throw a parent’s diagnosis of cancer into the equation? Melinda Beckwith from CanTeen, the peer support organisation for young people living with cancer, is the newly appointed psychologist working exclusively with young people whose parents have cancer. The session will cover what’s important in this stage of life, what’s ‘normal’ behaviour and what young people say they need help with when their parent has cancer. Bookings essential.

Mindfulness – Responding rather than reacting to life’s challenges
Thursday 16 June 12–1.30pm
Mindfulness is simply described as ‘moment to moment awareness, with acceptance’. When we are being mindful, we are engaged with the present moment, and are able to weather the storms of life more easily. Mindfulness is an enriching approach to living, and a skill than can be developed and strengthened through specific meditation practices. Join Suzanne Peyton, Mindfulness Teacher, to learn how Mindfulness programs help reduce the experience of stress, and participate in some introductory activities. Bookings essential.

Clinical Trials
Wednesday 29 June 12 –1.30pm
Dr Jacquie Chirgwin is Board Chairman of the Australia New Zealand Breast Cancer Trials Group (ANZBCTG) as well as a Medical Oncologist at Box Hill and Maroondah Hospitals. The ANZBCTG conduct innovative research programs which rigorously and scientifically test new breast cancer treatments through the conduct of clinical trials. Jacquie will talk about what’s involved in a clinical trial, and the ethics, administration and protocols you need to consider when deciding whether to participate in a clinical trial. Bookings essential.

July
Older, Fitter, Stronger

Monday 4 July 12–1.30pm
Libby Oldfield, Director of Fitwise Physiotherapy, will help us understand why it’s important to maintain good health, bone density and fitness as we age. Research shows gentle weight bearing exercises can improve well being and reduce falls, risk of fractures and osteoporosis, and help us lead an active and healthy life. Bookings essential.
