Radiation Trials - DCIS Participants Sought - from BCAG Newsletter Nov 2006

Many people give their time in different ways to improve conditions for the breast cancer community. Here we can discuss what's happening and what needs to happen. We can also celebrate the successes, acknowledge the input and learn how we can help or become involved.

BREAST CANCER ACTION GROUP NEWSLETTER ISSUE NUMBER 66

Radiation Trials - DCIS Participants Sought
At the recent Trans Tasman Radiation Oncology Group (TROG) Trials Review Meeting a researcher at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre announced that in the first quarter of 2007 a Phase III study of radiation doses for non low risk DCIS (ductal carcinoma in situ) breast cancer patients will commence recruiting participants.

The aims of the trial are several but include:
• to refine treatment selection for women with non low risk DCIS to optimise disease control and minimise toxicity.
• clinical issues, quality of life and biological issues.

The endpoints of the trial are initially time to local relapse; overall survival; time to disease recurrence; cosmetic outcome; radiation toxicity and quality of life.

Some 610 patients will be sought — not just from Victoria, as the other states are involved. Eligibility to participate in this trial will be restricted to women who have completely resected non low risk DCIS, divided into two groups, those less than 50 years of age and those over 50 years.

Participants will be randomised between two Radiotherapy regimes.

There are 21 interested centres across Australia that are expected to participate. The trial is due to run for 6 years.

Women with DCIS should talk to their radiation oncologist about becoming involved in this or other breast cancer trials being conducted throughout Australia. Trial participants can be assured that they will be monitored closely, and that any change either positive or negative will be attended to immediately.

One thing I have found is that helping other breast cancer sufferers either through the activities of the Breast Cancer Action Group, Cancer Voices or participating in trials has contributed to enhancing my own quality of life and hopefully that of others like me.
